Crystals That Nature Might Miss Creating
نویسنده
چکیده
No one should have any objections against the claim that the diamond crystal, the most precious gem polished usually with the brilliant cut, casts a spell on us by its stunning beauty. The beauty would be more enhanced and its emotional appeal would be raised to rational one if we would explore the microscopic structure, say the periodic arrangement of carbon atoms, which is actually responsible for the dazzling glaze caused by the effective refraction and reflection of light. Figure 1, found in many text books of solid state physics, illustrates the arrangement of atoms together with the bonding (depicted by virtual lines) of atoms provoked by atomic force. A close look at this figure (or its readymade model preferably) reveals that, as a 1-dimensional diagram in space, the diamond crystal is formed by a wed of the same hexagonal rings and has a “very big” symmetry, thereby being conspicuously distinguished from other crystals by its “microscopic beauty”.

Measurement of Morphological Characteristics of Raw Cane Sugar Crystals Using Digital Image Analysis
Raw cane sugar is one of the most important product in the sugar industry and is the main raw material for the white sugar production. Morphological and physical properties of this product might influence the final white sugar. For instance, the behavior during centrifugation, transport and storage is related to the characteristics of these crystals. The object of this study was to determine th...
متن کاملشکلگیری گارنتهای موجود در تودهی گرانیتوئیدی دهنو، شمالغرب مشهد
The granitoid intrusions of Dehnow, which is located in northwest of Mashhad in immediate contact with garnet-rich hornfels, contain large crystals of garnets. They provide an excellent opportunity to study the effect of host rocks in contamination of a garnet-bearing granitoid magma. The garnet crystals contain abundant inclusions that are indicative of igneous phases and are arranged in a ci...
متن کاملMethod and apparatus for the selective scoreboarding of computation results
Statically scheduled machines do have a disadvantage when dealing with dynamic events, such as cache hit or miss detection. Early VLIW machines were designed without caches, to achieve predictability in memory access. However, such designs suffer in memory performance. To achieve high performance, VLIW architectures must have adequate support for using caches. A simple VLIW design might use an ...
متن کاملPetrology of rocks in the Karik area, east of Meiduk mine of volcanic
Around The Karik village, east of Meiduk mine, Eocene volcanic rocks (andesitic basalt, andesite, dacite and rhyolite) and pyroclastic rocks (agglomerate and tuff) are exposed. These rocks are cut by several andesitic dikes. The major textures in the volcanic rocks are porphyritic and flow textures. The minerals such as plagioclase, alkali feldspar, quartz, pyroxene, amphibole, biotite and opaq...
متن کاملColloidal crystals with diamond symmetry at optical lengthscales
Future optical materials promise to do for photonics what semiconductors did for electronics, but the challenge has long been in creating the structure they require-a regular, three-dimensional array of transparent microspheres arranged like the atoms in a diamond crystal. Here we demonstrate a simple approach for spontaneously growing double-diamond (or B32) crystals that contain a suitable di...
